 Traci's Hope is Still Alive - 10/3/2009
When
Traci Gibson was diagnosed with breast cancer, her doctors gave her a
3-percent chance of living five years, and when she beat those odds,
Gibson credited the community for their support.
She wanted to help others with breast cancer, so she started Traci's Hope.
Three years after her death, the Greater Binghamton community continues
to support her cause with the 6th annual Traci's Hope Barbecue.
Last year's event brought out around 2000 people, and organizers say the BBQ is even bigger this year.
"I just, sometimes I shake my head. The community just comes to
support. They believe in it. They like helping their neighbors.
Traci used to say it's people helping people. That's how simple it
is," Traci's father Gordon Shiner said.
All the money raised from the barbecue stays locally to help people
with cancer pay for items not covered by insurance, such as rent,
heating bills and groceries.
