Some of the Northeast Bradford Panthers became Pink Panthers recently, when they held a 5K run/walk to raise funds for a breast cancer foundation.
The district's National Honor Society (NHS) held its second Panther 5K Run/Walk Race on Saturday, March 21, at the Northeast Bradford High School.
Sandy Morris, NHS advisor at the school, said that this is the second year the NHS held the event, which is a group service project for them. This year, however, was the first year they decided to donate the funds to the Traci's Hope Foundation, she said.
"One of the students suggested to do (the race) for breast cancer," Morris said. "Since (Traci's Hope) was a fairly local group, we thought that would be the best way to keep the funds local."
The Traci's Hope Foundation is a not-for-profit group out of Apalachin, N.Y., that helps area people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, according to information about the race.
More than 60 people came out to the race Saturday morning, Morris said: the youngest participant was 7 years old, and the oldest was in his 50s. She added that around $500 was raised by the race to be donated to the Traci's Hope Foundation.
The event went well and the weather was great for the event, Morris said, adding that they are planning on holding the event again next year.
The first place, overall male winner of the 5K was John Johnson at a time of 18:23, and the first place, overall female winner of the 5K was Kristen Carlsen with a time of 24:47, Morris said. Several other awards were given out to the top winners of different age groups, she added.
