Mini-golf maven boosts local charity
Joshua B., of radio station "Star" 105.7, has a big heart. And he has been mighty impressed with the local charity Traci's Hope -- which benefits women suffering from breast cancer -- for its commitment and ability to keep dollars raised right here, in our community. He also, he says, has a family history with the terrible disease.
But there is something else you should know about Joshua B. -- he loves argyle.
You know, that patterned material that looks like checkers turned sideways and bent. And so he has devised a charity event in which he and his radio partner, Lori, will get to wear -- you guessed it! -- argyle.
"Mini-golf," he told me over the phone last week.
Turns out that, along with argyle, Joshua loves the game in which golf meets cute. Anything that involves a teensy windmill, little animal statuary and waterfalls, well -- how can you resist it? he asked me. He has been known to vacation in places such as the Jersey shore JUST for the miniature golf.
On Saturday, he and his radio station's owners, Clear Channel, are hosting a celebrity mini golf tournament at Skate Estate in Vestal, to benefit Joshua B's charity of choice.
"Charity events almost always involve golf tournaments, and that is fine, except I don't play golf," Joshua B. said. But he is, apparently, unbeatable in mini golf.
So he is challenging our community to come out and try to beat his team. So far, nearly 20 teams have signed on, with whacky names such as "Putt Up or Shut up," the "Windmill Warriors" and "The Fiala Four."
You can join them, for just $35 for a team of four; register at www.star1057fm.com or in person at Clear Channel Radio, 320 N. Jensen Road, Vestal. Make checks payable to Traci's Hope, and send to the attention of Anne Marie Courtney.
Skate Estate is providing all the golf equipment and use of the premises for free, and Miss Cookie the clown will do face painting and make balloon animals. There will be free Starbucks iced coffee and snacks available for purchase.
"We're very excited Star 105.7 has decided to help this cause," said Gordon Shiner, father of Traci Gibson, for whom the charity is named. "Traci always used to say how important it was for people to help people in our community. Star 105.7's really taking the spirit of that to heart."
If you want to join him in thanking the guy who thought this up, just look for the guy in the argyle (socks, vest and knickers!).
