Traci's Hope benefit for breast cancer OWEGO, N.Y. -- What started as one woman's hope has turned into a small movement.
Traci Gibson, an Apalachin woman, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Four years ago, she held a benefit to celebrate her fifth year in the battle. All the money was given to women in Broome and Tioga counties, who were diagnosed with breast cancer. It was used to help them with car payments, rent and daycare -- costs that were not covered by health insurance.
Traci’s Hope benefit was held Saturday in Owego. Money raised at the benefit covers costs for things that aren’t covered by health insurance for breast cancer patients.
Traci passed away last year, but her friends and family say they'll continue to carry out her legacy.
"There's so many people who loved her, so many people who are helping us carry on. We knew what she wanted, she wanted to help people, to help her community, she wanted to give back to her community," said Gordon Shriner, Traci’s father.
Last year the benefit raised $50,000.
