OWEGO -- Seven years ago, Traci Gibson was diagnosed with breast cancer. In October, she died with hope for a cure.
Although she is gone, her efforts to help people with breast cancer lives on. The Owego Free Academy student government donated $1,000 to the not-for-profit group Traci's Hope on Wednesday. Traci's husband, Brian Gibson, accepted the donation.
His wife began the fund after friends, family and the community came together to help their family with day care, meals, bills and much more while Traci Gibson was undergoing treatment.
Traci's Hope does the same for other cancer victims -- paying what medical insurance won't cover, such as a furnace, Brian Gibson said.
"I thought it was a great thing for them to do," he said. "It's very nice that the kids are involved to support our cause."
The 32-member student government donated money that is accumulated from the graduating classes every year, said Ryken Ruuspakka, president of the student government. They wanted to benefit the community, he said.
"Our donation might not be enough to find a cure. However, this small contribution is to show that there is ample support by the community youth of Owego and Apalachin," he said.
