On February 7, the Student Council at the Owego Free Academy gathered to present Brian Gibson a $1,000 check to benefit Traci's Hope, a fund established to help local families that are battling breast cancer. Traci, who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer seven years ago, passed away within days of her annual fund raising event in October. According to Traci's husband Brian, the fund was established to assist families with fuel costs, clothing, or any other need they might have during their time of difficulty. "The check will help someone out," said Brian. After convening to discuss distribution of funds, the Student Council felt that Traci's Hope was a very worthwhile cause. And Ryken Ruuspakka, Student Council President, felt that although the dollars might not be enough, it shows support for Traci's efforts. The Student Council gathered at the Owego Free Academy to present the check to Brian, and to extend their support. Brian, upon receiving the check, thanked the Student Council for believing in Traci's Hope. WBNG Channel 12 was also at the event to support the efforts that continue in honor of the hope that Traci had for a cure. In 2006, Traci was given the Jefferson Award by WBNG News, which is a national honor, for the hope that she offered to families within the community that are battling Breast Cancer.
